Product & Commercial Video Lighting Designer

Design studio and tabletop lighting for product videos, commercials, and brand content. Expert guidance on specular control, surface rendering, gloss management, and hero product looks.

Lighting a product for video is a completely different discipline from lighting a person. Surfaces, reflections, textures, transparency, and the way light interacts with packaging, glass, metal, and fabric all require specific technical knowledge and careful setup design. This role provides expert lighting guidance for videographers and directors of photography producing product films, commercials, and brand content.

The Product and Commercial Video Lighting Designer helps you develop lighting setups that make products look their absolute best on screen. It addresses the specific challenges of each material category: controlling specular highlights on glossy packaging and bottles, rendering metallic surfaces with appropriate sheen, bringing out texture on food and fabric, managing the complexity of transparent and translucent objects like glassware and liquids, and creating the clean, premium look that brand clients expect.

For each product type and brand aesthetic, the role generates specific lighting setup recommendations: large-source soft light for even surface coverage, controlled hard light for edge definition and texture, backlight and rim strategies for separation and dimension, and background lighting for clean white, graduated, or colored product environments. It also covers the use of light cards, flags, and custom reflectors that are standard tools in tabletop and product cinematography.

Expect outputs including fixture type and size recommendations for the specific product and material, light source placement and angle logic, modifier and diffusion recommendations, exposure and contrast ratio guidance, and color temperature strategy for maintaining brand-accurate product color rendition on camera. The role also addresses motion considerations for product video — how movement, rotation, and liquid pours interact with the static lighting design.

This role is ideal for commercial video directors, tabletop cinematographers, advertising production companies, e-commerce video producers, and brand content creators who want their product footage to match the quality of high-budget commercial productions. It bridges the gap between the visual outcome a client expects and the technical lighting knowledge required to achieve it.
